**Artists in the Church: they have a special role in God’s heart and purpose in the church. Today, we will use the Old Testament priests and Levites to illustrate our role as artists in the church. The Old Testament foreshadows, in a symbolic way, the ideas God has about the way he is to be served. Here is some insight about the identity and roles that cross over into our New Testament lives.
A. Who do you Minister to?
Exodus 28:1-3
1 And take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office, even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.
2 And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.
3 And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
According to verse one, they’re names were Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. Who were they to minister to? God. Notice there were five; consequently there are five ministries in the church today. We’ll use the human hand to elaborate… In Genesis 38 the word for hand is “Yad” which means, “Power”.
**Years ago my Dad illustrated this using his own hand. He use his index finger symbolizing the ministry of the Prophet, then his middle finger as the ministry of the Evangelist. His ring finger symbolized the ministry of the Pastor, his pinky symbolized the ministry of the Teacher, and his thumb was the Apostle.
He went on to say, “Thus says the Lord” and used his index finger to point. “The Prophet will be used of God to bring direction and guidance. Then he went on to explain the the middle finger was the longest so this is why it represents the Evangelist… “The ministry of the Evangelist reaches out the furthest with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
“The ring finger works well to represent the ministry of the Pastor, because the pastor keeps God’s treasure; His people!” Then he went on with the pinky, “The pinky represents the ministry of the Teacher. The reason it’s the teacher is because it seems to be the smallest and the most overlooked ministry in the church… you don’t see any billboards promoting a teaching event coming to town” he chuckled.
Then he motioned to his thumb… “Now the thumb represents the ministry of the Apostle, the Apostle has the ability to fill any of the ministries in the church.” Then he started touching his thumb to each of his fingers… “He can Prophesy, he can Evangelize, he can fill the office of a Pastor, and he can Teach the word of God.”
By the looks of it, the ministry of the Apostle seems to be very powerful,” he continued. “But in my book, I think the Teacher is the strongest ministry there is!” Then he did a Karate Chop motion into his other hand. “Did you see that? All of the other fingers fall on the pinky!” “From the teacher come Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and yes, more Teachers!”
I don’t know about you, but I thought that was really cool! Now let’s get back to the topic at hand… (pun intended)
**OUR VERTICAL MINISTRY: The first responsibility of any priest in God’s temple was to minister unto the Lord. This vertical positioning;
Johnny Ramirez & The Cadence
seeing yourself as a person set apart to minister directly to God, makes a world of difference. As you’ll see later, we do also have a responsibility for God’s people. However, your service and responsibility to others must be fueled by a personal and direct connection with the Living God in order to be effective in what you do.
B. The Purpose of the Garments.
For who’s glory and beauty were the garments made for? According to verse two, the glory and beauty from the garments was for Aaron. Why? So that he might be seen as special.
**Most of the time when I ask this question, people answer for God’s glory and beauty, but the interesting thing is that the Bible actually reads that it was meant for Aaron’s glory and beauty.
“And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.”
The Holy Spirit caused me to understand that the garments that Aaron and his sons wore represent the talents and abilities that we as musicians wear today. These abilities, like Aaron’s garments, set us apart from the rest of the world; this is why rock and pop stars are idolized; their gifts set them apart from the rest of the world, which is what God intended.
We who are involved in the Christian music scene also receive that type of glory to a certain degree, but it is our responsibility as sons of God to honor Him with it. We must continually give God all the glory. How can we be sure that we will always do that? Verse three gives us some insight as to the answer.
“And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.”
**WEARING THE GLORY WELL: The clothing made for the priests was to display the glory and beauty of the one wearing it. The glory and beauty of our talents were made to be displayed, not hidden or apologized for. We need to humbly accept this responsibility and not get into the trap of false humility, which is really being ashamed and hiding what God has given us. Only when our glory is displayed, will the world get a glimpse of our God.
C. Who Makes the Garments?
Verse 3 teaches us that we should have people in our lives filled with wisdom that will help us develop the character that we should have in order to minister unto God.
**These men and women include our pastors, parents, teachers, etc. We must have people involved in our lives that love the Lord. These people must be given the right to come into our lives and tell us straight out if they see pride or anything else that might harm our relationship with God. The scripture tells us in Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
This same spirit cost Lucifer his position in heaven. Those of us who have been gifted; like Lucifer, will also receive much praise, but unlike Lucifer, we must remember what our gifts are for and to whom belongs the glory. If we do not, this same incredible gift that has been given to us will pull us away from God instead of toward Him; it is the nature of its design.
Lucifer forgot that he was a created being, and that he had been created for a specific purpose. The Bible also tells us in Ezekiel 28 that he was perfect in beauty and that his heart became corrupt because of his own splendor. I like to ask musicians, “How many times can you be told you’re awesome before you believe it?”
Pride is a very real threat in our lives, what could we possibly do to avoid falling into it? We should try to make sure that our gifts are molded by those that God has placed in our lives to do it.
**SERVING IN COMMUNITY: Notice in verse 1, that the priestly ministry was a family affair. Aaron did not go out there alone and minister. He did not make his own clothing. As artists, we can be tempted to be lone rangers because our artistic expressions are expressions of who we are as individuals. Being in community can be too uncomfortable because our character is stretched. God never intended this lone ranger model and he wants us to learn to find out who we can be in relationship to the rest of the Body of Christ.
Verses four through eight give us a list of the individual parts that must be contained in our garments. Each of these parts has a spiritual meaning…
D. The Individual Parts
Exodus 28:4-8
4 And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
5 And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen.
6 And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue, and of purple, of scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cunning work.
7 It shall have the two shoulder pieces thereof joined at the two edges thereof; and so it shall be joined together.
8 And the curious girdle of the ephod, which is upon it, shall be of the same, according to the work thereof; even of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.
**Verse four gives us a list of the things they were to wear. I’ve included the actual words and definitions of what those things are and what they mean to us today.
- A Breastplate: Choshen = to contain or sparkle, as in a pocket, or rich i.e. pocket full of riches.
- Ephod: Ephowd = a shoulder piece.
- A Robe: Meiyl = a covering.
- A broidered Coat: Shabats = to interweave threads of various colors in squares.
- A Mitre: Mitsnepheth = A tiara, i.e. official turban of a king or priest.
- A Girdle: Abnate = a belt.
- The breastplate was a pouch that the priest would keep the Urim and the Thummim in it; these were used to know the will of God as in yes or no. We must have a deposit of God’s word in our lives in order to know his will.
**The first thing we must have is the breastplate; a pocket full of riches. This means that we must have a deposit of God’s word in our lives so that we can know his will for us, our families, and our ministries.
Yikes!
I like to describe it this way… If the pastor comes to you on a Sunday morning and in the spur of the moment asks you to preach to the congregation, could you do it? Is there enough word in you, to feed the Lord’s sheep?
Let’s go on to the next item…
- The Ephod was a shoulder piece, a type of belt that went over the shoulder in order to signify responsibility. God wants us to be responsible for this office.
** For many years and in many cultures, the police and the military have worn belts that cross over their shoulders as part of their uniforms. This is a symbol of responsibility and authority. Most musicians consider themselves to be just that, musicians. They don’t realize that the moment they take the stage, they are standing in leadership positions.
The simplest way to prove what I’m saying would be to play the game of follow the leader. When you take the stage or the altar, everyone else follows you. If they are following you, that makes you the leader, it’s just that simple, and since these are all His children, God is expecting us to be responsible for what we say and do with His own. Whether you consider yourself a leader or not, God has given you authority in this area and holds you responsible for this office. Now let’s look at the robe…
- A robe was a form of covering for the priest; it represents submission to the covering of God and the Church
** Every musician individually needs to be covered by a church body. We need to have a pastor, and church that know us as regular people. This falls back with verse three. We need to have relationships with people that will help mold our character and keep us in check, but not just for that reason, we need these types of people especially for the times in our lives when we need protection or face difficult decisions.
**When we use our gifts how we see fit and do not seek out the covering of God through those leaders he has ordained in his body, we take ourselves out from under protection and can become subject to more of the enemy’s attacks. Without this covering, we will also be handicapped in developing the skills we need to excel in what we do.
These folks won’t be influenced or intimidated by your gifts, fame, or the fortune you may accumulate, they know the real you and will be able to speak God’s wisdom into your life at the correct time, and because of the relationship that you’ve established with them, you can rest assure that they’ll guide you the right way.
- A Broidered Coat symbolizes an interweaving of the colors. It represents the weaving together of various tribes and tongues, grafting the lost into our family
** As we continue to study these verses you’ll notice that the same colors are found in all the items. We will be discussing the meaning of these colors a little bit further on, but for now let’s concentrate on the meaning of squares. There is an organization of churches called “Foursquare” churches. Foursquare stands for the four gospels in the bible, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
The four gospels represent evangelism. The gospel; the news of Jesus Christ, was preached throughout the world and it was told in four different ways, and went out to multiple cultures!
You’ve probably noticed that when a musician makes it big, he or she begins to travel. This is kind of the norm for this type of gift. This is why the music ministry should be seen as evangelistic in nature. God intended for us to use this medium to proclaim liberty to the captive. This is why there are so many different forms and styles…, each one reaches someone. The only thing I’ve seen that makes this of no effect is when the musician or group really isn’t about spreading God’s kingdom, but about spreading their music or style.
**The work of an artist in the church is evangelistic in nature. Music, drama, dance, and visual media speak their own universal languages. When you go to create something, think of the lost world that may be affected by what you do.
- A Mitre is the headdress of a King or priest; it represents the covering of the mind.
** Our minds must be covered in such a way as to have the mentality or thought patterns of this office. We have to think and behave as priests of God. As creative people, our creativity does not flow in a vacuum, but proceeds from what we put into our minds. Therefore, our minds must be continually renewed in order to better express the heart and nature of our God.
Romans 12:2 (NLT)
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Now on to the next item…
- A girdle – This word is simply describing a belt or a sash that went bound around the waist.
** The scripture tells us in Ephesians 6:14… “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth…” The reason this belt goes around our loins is because our loins are what have the ability to reproduce. We must be able to reproduce what we have become in others.
**Healthy things reproduce. Our creative expressions should first be birthed out of our relationship with God, and then as they are shared, be reproduced in others. Life gives birth to more life and we are advancing the kingdom of God.
E. What Do These Colors Symbolize?
** Note that in verses five through eight, all of these things are made using the same colors. Let’s see what these colors mean.
- Gold = Deity, meaning God.
- Blue = Heaven, or the revelation of God
- Purple = Royalty
- Scarlet = Atonement, or cleansing
- White = Purity, also triumph, glory, majesty
** Summary: In every area of our lives: our hearts, responsibilities, the covering we receive from our churches, the revelation or understanding that we have of scripture, and even what we reproduce in others. In all things, we must display God clearly, keeping our hearts focused on heaven, knowing that we are sons and daughters of the Most High God, embracing our forgiveness through the cross, and living as pure children in a dark world. God must be visible in every area of our lives… Why such a big deal?
F. The Spiritual Significance.
Exodus 28:9-12
9 And thou shalt take two onyx stones, and grave on them the names of the children of Israel:
10 Six of their names on one stone, and the other six names of the rest on the other stone, according to their birth.
11 With the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a signet, shalt thou engrave the two stones with the names of the children of Israel: thou shalt make them to be set in ouches of gold.
12 And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the children of Israel: and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for a memorial.
** Verse twelve tells us that Aaron was to wear these stones upon his shoulders… why? Symbolically shoulders represent responsibility… God has entrusted us with His people… His greatest treasure is His people!
** As artists, our responsibility is to bring the body of believers to a firsthand experience with God. We can only do this when we have touched him ourselves. In the old testament, the best they could do was to speak for the people to God. Now, through the power of the cross, we can encourage people toward their own direct pursuit of him through the Holy Spirit. Our job is much easier as we partner with the Holy Spirit who enables us to glorify Him.
** It’s no surprise that the first thing God begins to work on after He is introduced into our lives is our character. If you hadn’t seen it by now, this entire teaching has to do with the molding of our character!
CONCLUSION: Music is a reflection of the soul of the musician. If your soul is tainted, your music will be too.
STORY:
A few years back I had an experience at a church where I was working. The pastor came to me right after Sunday morning service and told me to call an emergency meeting with the worship team for 2:30 that afternoon.
He went on to explain that less than ten percent of the entire membership had been tithing and that the church was going through a major financial crisis. He further explained that out of the entire worship team, my wife and I were the only ones tithing.
I was completely shocked. I had no idea that this had been happening. I did as he asked and called the meeting, but before the meeting took place… the Lord put it in my heart to ask the Pastor’s wife to check the log. I felt that she would find that the first people to stop tithing would be members of the worship team.
She found exactly that and showed me that the following people to stop were the ushers, then finally the congregation… interesting isn’t it?
I remembered the teaching of the oil… it flowed from Aarons head to his beard, to his skirts, I realized that the same thing happens in the negative sense too!
How do I apply it? Ask yourself these questions…
- How am I displaying the glory God gave me in my talents? How can I become a better steward of these talents?
- Am I tempted to sometimes “go horizontal” before “going vertical”? What steps can I take or mindsets can I adopt in order to change this tendency?
- What is God showing me about my responsibility to be in community with believers?
- How may my gifts reach a lost world with the gospel of Christ?
